Why You Should Give Computing a Try

Computing is a subject I’ve always had a passion for, and I’d like to talk about it in this article. Computing is a complicated subject, but when you can understand it, the way it can change your way of thinking is remarkable, taking standard problems and thinking about them in more efficient ways that anyone else wouldn't have thought of. And St Kentigern's has the privilege of having the subject. Not even out of bias, I believe St Kents has the best computing department. From how we teach Java instead of Python, offering an experience that would be more akin to what you would work with in the real world, our exam results compared to other schools are amazing and the department we have is full of great people as well who would do anything to make sure your experience in the subject, and in the school is the best it can be.
Over the years, the department has had many great minds pass in and out. With multiple students in high universities for computing science. One of these students is Alex, whos currently studying Computer Science in the University of Strathcylde.
When asked what they do in university, Alex responded:
“I study various concepts, such as coding in java, working with circuits and understanding logic gates. We have classes that are just topics in computing, so it's group projects. We're doing cyber security but it's more boring, last time I don't even remember what it was. We have a technology and business class (which is just N5 business).”
This gives some insight into what actually happens in the computing course. I would never have guessed that you would actually be working with physical circuits and even taking business classes. When asked how their time in STK helped, they responded:
“I appreciate the fact that our computing department is very enthusiastic about the subject that they teach, and they almost always make you strive for the best you can do (unless you're in advanced higher, they tell you to dumb it down). The most used phrase towards me was 'keep it simple, stupid'. They're always willing to lend a hand to you.”
When asked for some final words of advice, he said:
“Make sure you're actually interested in the subject, not just cause your friends are interested or because of the money, cause even if you do like it you'll end up getting tired of it. So, if you get through you definitely need an interest in the subject.”
Alex’s words here are very true. While computing is an amazing subject, it's not for everyone. But at least give it a try; you don't know where you’ll find yourself. I (the author) have always been interested and have coded loads of projects over the years, but I still find myself drained by it. But it's the passion I have that drives me through, and if you want to last, you’re going to need it as well. But I encourage you to look into computing a little bit, cause maybe like me and many others you’ll find a passion in this amazing subject.
