At St. Kents, there are multiple opportunities for you to get involved with extracurricular activities. The school offers a wide range between things like chess club, drama club, football and for senior pupils aged 16 and up, they offer a life drawing class up until February. (please see the art department for further details.)
We spoke to a member of the PE department, Mr. McGonigal, to see what he had to say about what kind of extracurriculars PE had to offer.
Q. So what clubs does your facility offer?
A. So at the moment we offer football for girls of all ages, we offer our dance club for, again, girls of all ages, there’s extracurricular football clubs for the boys of pretty much every year group aswell
Q. Okay, so if someone was to want to join one of the clubs, how would they go about doing that.
A. So the easiest way to join the clubs is to come speak to one of us directly down in the PE department and we can advise you of days and times for when things are running and also if your interested in anything else, Miss Coulter our active schools coordinator can help you out with that, she’s got lots of opportunities for pupils of all ages aswell, she’s always telling us I great detail.
Q. Are there future plans for clubs or is there any clubs you’d like to offer but haven’t been able to due to a lack of interest
A. So obviously as we can see all around us we are severely limitedin the PE department due to our lack of facilities, however in future, certainly I would be interested in anything basketball team, a good basketball team would be great in the school as well as a volleyball group . Volleyball is a great social sport and not alot of people play it outside of school so its one of the best games you can play. Something we’ll be really keen to offer once we have the space to do it. Also all these clubs are very beneficial to pupils as its statistically proven that those who take part in extra curricular activities in school and outwith tend to do better in their SQA PE exams.
Q. So no American Football?
A. Sadly we don’t think we’d be able to get the equipment on the schools budget. In an ideal world, we would.
We also spoke to two students for input on the schools extracurricular activities as students who have had an active involvement in bringing a pupil favourite club to light: Debate club. These two S5 girls helped found Debate club when they where in S4 after taking part in a debate competition
Q. How did debate start?
A. Well, I mean after that Debate competition we put our names down for, we thought having one in school would be a good idea- I mean I know I enjoyed it. Plus I’ve defo made good pals from debate as well as learned about cool stuff from our motions that we’ve done.
Q. Is debate open for all?
A. Eh, I think so, I know for definite that there’s a S5+S6 club and an S4+S3 but I’m not sure if there’s a S1+S2 one. Definitely ask Mr. Kupfer if you want to know more.
Q. What kind of debates are done?
A. Well, it’s mix of political, non political, silly... just really depends. Like we’ve done a debate on Taylor Swift and whether or no she’s washed or not, but we’ve also done one on Abrahamic Religions. There’s a good mix of both.
